Malta has deposited the instruments of accession to the International Convention on the Simplification and Harmonisation of Customs Procedures (revised Kyoto Convention) with the World Customs Organization.

Some of the revised Convention’s key elements include the application of simplified Customs procedures in a predictable and transparent environment, the maximum use of information technology, the utilization of risk management, a strong partnership with the trade and other stakeholders, and a readily accessible system of appeals.

The Convention entered into force on the 3rd of February 2006. It has 68 contracting parties to date, including all of the EU Member States.

The WCO whose seat is located in Brussels, Belgium, is an intergovernmental organisation dedicated to Customs issues. It has a global membership. This organisation strives to develop global standards and to simplify and harmonise Customs procedures. The WCO is also an important organisation in the promotion of Customs enforcement and compliance and anti-counterfeiting and piracy initiatives among other things.
