Real Mallorca came from behind to beat a weakened Barcelona 2-1 and spoil the celebrations for the new Primera Liga champions yesterday.

Samuel Eto'o gave Barca an early lead with his 29th goal of the campaign, but quick strikes from Juan Arango and Cleber Santana sealed the fightback for mid-table Mallorca in the second half.

Second-placed Real Madrid's 3-2 defeat away to Villarreal on Saturday left Barca uncatchable at the top of the standings and they remain on 86 points with two games left, eight ahead of Real.

Pep Guardiola sent out a number of youth players at the Ono Estadi with his focus turning to the Champions League final against Manchester United on May 27, and a possible third trophy to add to the King's Cup and the league title.

Eto'o headed home Bojan Krkic's cross early on, and had a host of chances to add to the scoreline, but ran into an inspired Miguel Angel Moya in the home goal.

Mallorca striker Arango curled a superb free-kick over the wall to level in the 73rd and two minutes later Cleber Santana glanced a header past Barca reserve goalkeeper Oier.

Eto'o had the chance to level from the spot in the final minute, but struck his penalty against the base of the post.

Earlier, a diving header into his own net from Malaga's Helder Rosario earned Sporting Gijon a 2-1 home win that hauled them out of the relegation places.

With the scores level at 1-1 in the 53rd minute, the Portuguese defender flung himself at Diego Castro's cross and inadvertently diverted the ball inside the far post.

Sporting climbed up to 17th on 37 points, above Osasuna on the head-to-head rule, after the Navarrans drew 0-0 with Sevilla on Saturday.

A controversial late penalty scored by Jose Barkero gave Numancia a 1-0 home win over direct rivals for the drop Recreativo Huelva.

Recre's vociferous appeals that the foul on Gorka Brit in the 88th minute was outside the area, appeared justified by television replays.

Recre have 33 points and Numancia 35, two short of safety with two rounds of matches left to play.
