Home Affairs Minister Emanuel Mallia this evening called on a group of 24 new prison correctional officers not to betray the trust shown to them by society and not to give in to temptations.

Dr Mallia inspected the recruits during a passing out parade at the temporary quarters of the Police Academy in Sta Venera.

During the parade the recruits became the first correctional officers to take a vow 'to be loyal servants of the republic and its people', to follow all the regulations and codes of the prison and conduct themselves without fear or favour.

"Society has trusted you and you must not betray that trust despite the temptations you may face," Dr Mallia said.

He said he would continue to visit the prisons - despite criticism - because he was committed to reforming the institution.
