A migrant from Mali who was shot and injured by the police near Ghar Hasan at the end of last month, was accused in court today of the attempted murder of three police constables.

He was accused today of attempted murder and attempted serious injury of constables Brian Grech, Jason Schembri and Daniel Debattista.

He was also accused of violently resisting the police, carrying a knife without police permission and leading a vagrant life - he had been living in one of the caves.

When defence counsel Patrick Valentino requested the court to order a psychiatric examination, the accused, on being informed by an interpreter, insisted that he did not need a doctor and he was normal.

The court remanded him in custody and ordered that he be held at the Forensic Unit of Mt Carmel Hospital - where he has already been held since his release from Mt Carmel Hospital.
