A maid who admitted to stealing two gold necklaces from the house she was cleaning was today given a suspended sentence, with a magistrate warning her that she was being given a second chance.

Magistrate Charmaine Galea warned Brenda Orsini, 49, from Senglea, that her crime could have cost her seven years in jail.

The court heard how the necklaces were stolen on Saturday morning from a house in Triq il-Pedalwett in Swieqi and sold to a jeweller in Valletta.

Magistrate Galea jailed Ms Orsini for 18 months suspended for three years, warning her that she must not commit another crime in these three years. She was also given a three-year supervision order. Ms Orsini passed on the money she had received for the necklaces.

Police Inspectors Fabian Fleri and Carol Fabri prosecuted.
