A 23-year-old man was sentenced to a six-month suspended jail term and fined €1,000 this evening after admitting before the Gozo court to having made a bomb threat to the same court earlier in the day.

Gabriel Zammit was arraigned before Magistrate Paul Coppini after he was arrested following a tip-off to the police by Magistrate Joe Mifsud.

Mr Zammit had appeared in court in the morning and was convicted of not paying alimony to his estranged wife. He was given an hour to pay €600 in backdated maintenance payments.

The bomb threat was made to the court within that hour.

Magistrate Mifsud gave the police two names, saying he had strong suspicions that the threat could have been made by one of them.

Police investigations confirmed that one of the persons indicated by the magistrate was involved.

Magistrate Mifsud continued to hear criminal cases despite the bomb threat.
