The court yesterday ruled there was sufficient evidence to issue a bill of indictment against Nicolai Magrin, a former driving examiner implicated in a bribes scandal.

Mr Magrin, 31, from Sliema, is accused of accepting bribes to give a pass mark to applicants doing driving tests in and before April this year.

Police Inspector Angelo Gafà, prosecuting, testified before Magistrate Savior Demicoli yesterday along with another two witnesses, including a 21-year-old from Marsaxlokk who was placed under probation for two years in October after being found guilty of bribing Mr Magrin.

Earlier this week another person was sentenced in connection with the case. The woman, whose name cannot be mentioned by court order, was given a conditional discharge for a year after she too was found guilty of bribing the examiner.

The 21-year-old had attended driving lessons for over a year and had sat for the driving test seven times, failing on every occasion. The lessons had cost him over Lm1,000.

"It was the person who was giving him driving lessons who suggested that if he paid just Lm50 to the person carrying out the test he would pass and that's what happened," the defence lawyer had said.

Lawyer Matthew Brincat was defence counsel.
