Workers from the Works Division of the Resources Ministry this morning started emptying and dismantling the Magic Kiosk at the bottom of Tower Road in Sliema after the second of two leases for the occupation of the land expired. The operation was directed by the Government Property Division.

The owner was given notice to evict last week. Although he is protesting the eviction, the court has not granted a warrant of prohibitory injunction.

This morning's operation started at about 6 a.m., with the workers dismantling the prominent turquoise-coloured aluminum restaurant under the eyes of a sizable police contingent. They are using two cranes and several trucks.

The Malta Environment and Planning Authority last month approved an application to remove the restaurant.

St Anne Square, which it occupies, is to be rehabilitated in line with the rehabilitation of Tower Road.

The decision is an initiative of Resources Minister George Pullicino, who has been working on it since 2005, and Parliamentary Secretary for Land Jason Azzopardi.
