The full-time driver engaged by the Malta Sports Council for its chairman, Labour MP Luciano Busuttil, had a salary of €12,755 a year, bonus and weekly supplement, according to information given in Parliament by Education Minister Evarist Bartolo.

Replying to a question by Robert Arrigo (PN) he said the driver has no other fringe benefits and has not been involved in any travel costs. He is the only person engaged by the council on the basis of position of trust. The weekly supplement was not disclosed.

The engagement of the driver was revealed by The Sunday Times of Malta on February 8.

Francis Borg was engaged without a public call and did not come from the public service.

Although Dr Busuttil's post requires him to work only a few hours a week he insisted that “a chairman is a chairman around the clock.”
