The employment figure for the manufacturing industry in May plummeted by 2,124 over last year’s figure, according to the National Statistics Office.
Another substantial decrease was registered in the agricultural industry, bringing the numbers down by 1,177. Unemployment in May rose by 1,248, while the labour supply increased by 881 persons over the corresponding month in 2008.
While employment in the manufacturing industry is experiencing difficulties, the number of people in full-time gainful employment in the service industries rose by 2,147, with the largest rise being that of 1,083 in business activities.
On the other hand, part-time employment increased by 2,146. The increase included 1,150 people whose part-time activity was their primary employment and 999 persons who did part-time work on the side.
The labour market data provided by the Employment and Training Corporation for May shows a drop of 367 persons in the number of full-time gainfully occupied.
