The letter written by Mario Cardona, treasurer of the Koperativa Rurali Manikata (Manikata Solidarity With Nadur Farmers, January 23) must be one of the saddest letters I have ever read in this newspaper.

I find in inconceivable that an organisation like the Roman Catholic Church can openly commit a crime such as the building of the cemetery in Nadur, and that Mepa has condoned it! Not only has it been built in an ODZ but also against the advice and pleas of the farming community in the area (parishioners of Nadur and paying members of the Church) and several environmental experts.

I visited the site last week and left with tears in my eyes, tears for the farmers who will no longer have access to clean water for their crops, whose belief in the Church must surely be shaken and who now have nowhere to turn to because even Mepa has cowered under the power of the Church. May those buried there rest in peace in the knowledge of what has been destroyed in their name.
