A huge queue of cars for the Gozo ferries formed up tonight as hundreds of Maltese returned home at the end of their summer shutdown.

The queue formed at 4.30pm and by the evening extended well into Xewkija as the Gozo Channel’s three ferries operated a shuttle service.

At midnight the Gozo Channel's electronic notice board still said a shuttle service was in operation, even though two of the ferries, the Gaudos and Malita, were berthed for the night.

Motorists who had been in the queue at Ghajnsielem at 11pm only boarded at 1am, when the situation returned to normal.

The ferry company can also expect another busy weekend next weekend, which will be the last long weekend of the summer.
