The quiet hum of motor racing will be heard through London this summer after the capital was chosen to host the finale of the Formula E season.

Fans of motor sport are expected to flock to Battersea Park on the south bank of the River Thames after the local council was granted planning permission to create a temporary racing circuit.

But those expecting to be deafened by the revs and roars of traditional Grand Prix cars will be disappointed - or delighted.

Formula E cars are electric, and so make little more than a soft purr.

A temporary circuit, complete with pit lanes, will be built largely following the route of the park's existing roads. There will also be stands for spectators and hospitality areas.

The two-day ticketed event on June 27 and 28 - the last two races of the Formula E championship - is expected to attract around 30,000 people each day and should land Wandsworth Council a £1 million windfall over five years, money which will be reinvested into the park.

As well as the events there will be a Formula E school series race, which will see children from 10 local schools compete in self-assembled electric kit cars.

Organisers have promised to protect Battersea Park from being damaged and to minimise the impact of the event on neighbours and people using it.

Wandsworth councillor Sarah McDermott said: "This plan will bring a global sporting event to Battersea and meets a series of exacting conditions to protect the park from harm.

"We can now look forward to a spectacular racing spectacle set within the grounds of one of London's most beautiful and historic parks."

She added: "The significant funding this event generates for the park will be spent on maintaining and upgrading its facilities and features. The result will be an even more beautiful and attractive place for everyone to enjoy."
