Considerable damage was caused last night when a fierce fire destroyed a large locker room of the Malta Golf Club in Marsa.

A club official said the damage may, according to rough estimates, exceed €230,000.

The damaged items include between 80 and 100 sets of golf clubs, each costing some €1,000 plus other equipment, light fittings, and the roof of the room, which had been made of corrugated iron and fibre. The spokesman said the club will also lose earnings as a result of the incident.

The cause of the blaze is not known, although some suspect it could have been embers from the fireworks of the nearby Qormi feast.

The blaze was extinguished by fire-fighters of the Civil Protection Department.
