No one with a bit of intelligence will take the statement made by Mario Debono, spokesman for the Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprises – GRTU seriously. Their members have been allowed to rip off consumers in Malta and Gozo for many, many years and those of us who are in a situation of comparing the costs of medicines in Malta with those other countries know better and we are not just talking of the 16.6 per cent markup made by chemists as claimed by Mr Debono. When pharmacies change hands they do so for top dollar and one never sees a pharmacy closing down, especially when they are compared with other businesses, such as grocers, restaurants, bars, coffee shops etc.

One rule for one business in our “free trade” Malta and another for the chemists who still live in the land of protected monopolies!
