England and Liverpool defender Glen Johsnon suffered a medial ligament injury to his right knee during Liverpool's 1-0 win at Aston Villa on Tuesday, the club said today.

Johnson, likely to be included in England's squad for next year's World Cup finals in South Africa, was injured after 88 minutes at Villa Park and limped off shortly before Fernando Torres scored Liverpool's injury-time winner.

"The player will see a specialist tomorrow, after which we should be able to more accurately determine the length of his rehabilitation period," a club spokesman told the team's website (www.liverpoolfc.tv).
