Team Malta is currently in Montenegro to take part in the 18th edition of the Games of the Small States of Europe. Expectations are high that the Maltese athletes could improve on the haul of 29 medals won in San Marino two years ago. It was a golden day for Team Malta at the 2019 Games of the Small States of Europe as the Maltese athletes won three gold and three silver medals to take their overall tally to 25 medals - six gold, 11 silver and eight bronze.

The track and field athletes took centre stage as Lisa Marie Bezzina and Jordan Gusman completed a long distance double after adding a 10,000 metres gold medal to their 5,000m success - an historic achievement in track and field events.

There was another double in the triple jump as Ian Paul Grech placed second in the men's event with a best leap of 15.00 metres while Claire Azzopardi also took silver in the women's event.

In shooting, Gianluca Chetcuti retained his gold in the double trap competition when he finished ahead of team-mate William Chetcuti, who collected his second silver medal of the Games.

Team Malta could win more medals as Elaine Genovese and Francesca Curmi have booked their place in tomorrow's women's doubles final after defeating Montenegro 7-6 7-6. They face Cyprus for the gold medal.

Genovese is already assured of a medal after settling for bronze following her singles semi-final defeat earlier this morning.

The women's basketball team beat Cyprus and will now face off Luxembourg with a bronze medal at stake.

6.05pm Gusman has done it he won the 10,000m race to complete a double in long distance.

5.50pm The women's basketball team won their match against Cyprus 75-49 to bag their second victory. It was a crucial success as Angela Adamoli's girl will now take on Luxembourg in the final match tomorrow with the winner taking the bronze medal.

5.40pm Bezzina becomes the first female long distance runner to clinch a 5,000m and 10,000m double in a GSSE. She clocked a time of 35 minutes and 38 seconds which is merely outside her personal best of 35.37 minutes.

5.25pm GOLD MEDAL Lisa Marie Bezzina has done it. She completed a long distance double after winning the 10,000m race to give Malta their fifth gold medal of the Games.

5.15pm The women's basketball team are coasting to victory against Cyprus as they are leading 57-39 at the start of the final quarter.

5pm MEDAL!!! Claire Azzopardi won Malta's first medal on the track today when she landed silver in the triple jump.

The young jumper produced a best leap of 12.30m to place second overall.

4.45pm Back to the 200m final and Wingfield's fourth placing has been confirmed by the official timings as the Maltese sprinter clocked 24.66.

The gold medal went to Iceland's Jona Bjarnadottir in 24.26 ahead of team-mate Tina Whitworth. Annas Bauer of Luxembourg took bronze in 24.53.

4.40pm Good news coming from the basketball as the Maltese girls are leading Cyprus 29-19 at the interval.

The Maltese team must beat Cyprus to remainn in the hunt for a medal.

4.35pm Charlotte Wingfield missed out on a medal in the 200m as she could only finish in fourth place.

Two years ago, Wingfield had won gold in both the 100m and 200m races.

4.10pm The women's basketball girls have started their crucial match against Cyprus.

Angela Adamoli's girls must beat the Cypriots to stay in the hunt for a bronze medal.

At present, the Maltese girls are trailing Cyprus 11-9.

3.45pm Some excellent news from tennis as Elaine Genovese and Francesca Curmi are through to the final of the women's doubles.

The women's duo have beaten Montenegro 6-3 7-6 to put themselves in contention to win the gold medal.

They will face Cyprus in the final on Saturday.

1.45pm Some statistics from that memorable double medals success in double trap. It is the third time that Team Malta clinced a gold and silver medal double in this competition.

The first time was in San Marino 2001 when on that occasion William Chetcuti finished just behind the late Philip Busuttil.

Four years later it was William Chetcuti who took gold ahead of Emanuel Grima.

For William Chetcuti this was his fifth medal in double trap in GSSE, winning three gold and two silver.

12.35pm Gianluca Chetcuti finishes with 132 points, just two ahead of Chetcuti for Malta's second ever gold and silver swoop in a GSSE since Andorra 2005. Gian Marco Berti of San Marino takes bronze.

12.31pm GIANLUCA CHETCUTI WINS.... he hits the final pair to secure a second successive gold medal.

12.30pm It's tight at the top as Gianluca Chetcuti has missed six clays and need to hit one of the two final pair to take gold ahead of William Chetcuti.

12.20pm Gianluca Chetcuti is well on his way to win a second successive gold medal after hitting 12 from 14. He just needs another 11 to seal his second successive title.

12.15pm More good news for William Chetcuti as he is sure of finishing in the silver medal position as Berti has already missed two clays and cannot leapfrog the Maltese double shooter.

12.10pm MEDAL!!! William Chetcuti has won a second medal in these Games as his 28 in the final round has put him on 130 points and cannot go out of the top three positions. He is also almost a ssured of another silver at least as San Marino's Gian Marco Berti must hit a straight of 30 to overhaul him....

12.05pm The competition has entered the decisive stage with just one round to go. Here, Gianluca Chetcuti is on course for the gold medal as he is leading the way on 107 points. He is five clear of team-mate William Chetcuti who must fend off the challenge of San Marino's Gian Marco Berti who is just behind.

12pm There is no final in the double trap as organisers decided that all shooters will compete in five rounds of 50 clays with the top three shooters filling the podium.

11.50am Also in shooting William Vella has booked his place in the Air Rifle final after going through the qualifying stage this morning.

Vella placed seventh from 11 shooters with 593.3 points. Milos Bozovic, of Montenegro, topped the competition with 614.3.

11.45am In tennis Elaine Genovese has bowed out of the women's singles at the semi-final stage after she lost to Luxembourg's Molinaro 6-3 6-0. Despite the defeat, Genovese will return home for a silver medal.

Later this afternoon she will team up with Francesca Curmi in a bid to reach the women's doubles final

11.35am The big news this morning is that Gianluca Chetcuti and William Chetcuti are dominating the double trap competition and are currently leading the way with just less than two rounds left.

Gianluca Chetcuti, the gold medallist in San Marino, is topping the charts with 79 points, two clear of his team-mate William Chetcuti with San Marino's Gian Marco Berti third on 75.
