On Saturday, April 2, thousands of young people sat for their English language listening comprehension examination. Soon after, I heard comments like “terrible reader”, “was reading only to herself”, “strange accent” and, occasionally, “excellent reader”.
This way of testing English listening comprehension is most unfair, not only because the texts differ from sitting to sitting, but also because of this great variety of readers.
When will the Matsec board invest in some form of technology so that at least the reader is a properly trained one who has been recorded professionally?
