The Budget is on Wednesday and the election of the PN's Deputy Leader so, in the absence of Labour saying anything new (not an unusual phenomenon) there's not much to write about. After all, little I can write, esteemed economist that I am (not) will influence the Budget.

Did you notice, yesterday, how virtually every comment on the news that income tax rates will be reduced a tad was negative?

The one I loved most was where the commenting genius dredged a scintillating piece of originality from the depths of his cliche' hoard and said it was "too little, too late", though too little of what and too late for what was not expanded upon.

Too little to impact the world economic crisis, maybe?

Not much I will write will influence the PN Councillors, either. Some fun can be had surmising who is in who's camp or about whether the tea-leaves about the PN having a better chance of winning the election with Busuttil as deputy leader will be read and taken notice of, but the ways of grass-roots politicians are wondrous to behold, so you never know.Whichever way the cookie crumbles, it's a good choice to have for the PN, especially if it ends up with both the contenders being Deputy, one PM and t'other Party.

The Gonzi/Fenech/Busuttil threesome will trump Muscat/Farrugia/Abela any day, which will make for interesting pre-election debates. So with nothing to write about, one tends to write about nothing, in this case Franco Debono.

He's muttering about voting against the Budget, which he may well do, thus accelerating his demise from the political scene a few months earlier than it would have happened anyway. He'd be giving aid and succour to the enemy, in the time-honoured phrase, but apart from this transient joyousness to Labour's Lil'Elves and Peculiar Pundits, he'll be achieving little else, because the elections are upon us, whichever way you slice the cucumber.

It must be a strange feeling, being Debono at the moment, from having your every whine and whinge published in the national press, to being ignored and having to make do with the comments on your rant-blog.
