I refer to the letter from Gżira local councillors regarding the garden at the yacht marina (August 23) and am pleased to see that the garden has again been lit up and that works seem to be underway on the lights in the marina.

I was, however, surprised at the reaction of the Gżira council because at no time did I say that the gardens had not been given a face lift or that the playing apparatus had not been upgraded.

Better late than never.

My intention was to bring to the fore, after noting personally and having my attention drawn to it by a number of residents of both Gżira and Ta’ Xbiex, the fact that the whole area was in complete darkness, during which time it was unsafe when the sun went down. With regard to where the garden is and where it was opened, I refer the Gżira council to a newspaper report which told of the good work by a British serviceman to establish and open (some 115 years ago) the gardens in Ta’ Xbiex. The Times ran an article in the mid-1990s, in the series A Century Ago, which told of the opening of this garden.
