As part of its monthly commitment to update its members and the public about new market developments, the Malta Group of Professional Engineering Institutions, in collaboration with ABB Furse of Nottingham, UK and their local representatives MCE Limited, recently organised a presentation.

The presentation, entitled ‘Lightning protection of high-rise buildings in excess of 60 metres’ was recently held at the Corinthia Palace Hotelin Attard.

The presentation was put forward by Jason Leatherland, who is the global sales support specialist for ABB Furse and has over 17 years earthing and lightning protection experience.

Furse as a company has been providing lightning protection solutions for over a hundred years and believes the fundamental ingredient to success is education.

The topics covered in the presentation included an overview of ABB Furse, understanding the lightning phenomenon and the lightning protection standards, the requirements that need to be considered to provide adequate protection for different building surface shapes (such as rooftops or facades) as well as the different product types and their application with a specific focus on protecting high-rise buildings and towers in excess of 60 metres height.

The subject of the talk covered a topic regarding extra-tall buildings, a budding architectural phenomenon being witnessed today in many of the new developments emerging all over the island. Attendance was high and there was an active interaction between speaker and participants present.
