The 'Light of Peace', a candle lit in Bethlehem, was brought to Malta this afternoon as a reminder of seasonal peace and of the deeper meaning of Christmas.

The candle was brought to Malta on the initiative of Malta International Airport, continuing a 22-year-Austrian tradition initiated by ORF Austrian Television in Upper Austria as a relief project for handicapped people.

MIA explained that every year an Austrian child is taken to fetch 'The Light of Peace' from Bethlehem. The flame is lit in Bethlehem’s Grotto of the nativity and enters the homes of millions of people in Europe.

It is also taken to the European Parliament in Strasbourg and European Union institutions in Brussels.

It has also been taken to Ground Zero in New York.

The Light of Peace will tomorrow be presented to the President, and the Bishop of Gozo will receive it when he blesses the new MIA chapel.

On Friday 'The Light of Peace' will be taken to Gozo.
