Lifecycle volunteers will tomorrow begin their long trip from Istanbul in Turkey to Damascus in Syria, in the shadow of the tragic death of one of their key members, Clifford Micallef.

The marathon ride in different destinations is an annual event in aid of the Renal Unit at Mater Dei Hospital. Mr Micallef was killed in a shocking hit-and-run accident on the Cost Road last week.

"I would be lying if I said it has not had an effect on morale because it has, and for the sake of others in need we must do this event," said chairman and coordinator Alan Curry.

"We don't expect it to be easy and as always I am sure it will prove to unite us in our goal. This will be as tough as it comes but I really feel the team has an extra special focus this year."

The group left early yesterday morning after having met Archbishop Paul Cremona the previous day. Donations can be made by calling 5004 9065 to donate €10, 5004 9060 to donate €20 or by sending a text message to 5061 9229 to donate €11.65.
