A Tripoli-registered tugboat which was intercepted off Malta last Sunday and later escorted to Grand Harbour, left Malta this morning, heading south and carrying an ambulance.

Mystery surrounded the presence of the tug boat, which reportedly left from the Tripoli are of Libya. Reports that it carried some soldiers who had defected from the Gaddafi forces, could not be confirmed.

The tugboat was intercepted by two patrol boats off Delimara and later escorted to Grand Harbour, where it was kept under guard.

The crew originally claimed they had been fishing, a claim that was quickly discounted.
