A Libyan national charged with taking drugs into prison was remanded in custody in spite of an offer from the Libyan embassy to post bail on the man’s behalf.

Tarek Ibrahim Alshlmani, 42, who suffers from serious medical problems, denied taking a sachet of heroin to prison while visiting a friend yesterday.

The Libyan, whose accommodation at the Vivaldi Hotel in Paceville is paid for by the embassy, walked into court on crutches.

Lawyer Veronique Dalli appeared for the accused.
