Fighting between rival militias in Libya’s capital Tripoli on Thursday evening was sparked by the death of a militia commander in Malta.

The leader of the Misurata militia was brought to Malta earlier this week for treatment after he was heavily injured in a gun battle.

Fighters from Misurata drove into Tripoli on Thursday evening to avenge his death. In the fighting one person was reported dead and several others injured.

The latest developments follow the temporary kidnap last month of Libyan prime minister Ali Zeidan, whose government is struggling to exert influence as militias demand a greater share of the country’s wealth.

Prime Minister Joseph Muscat this morning said developments in Libya were of “concern” and the Government was in constant contact with the Libyan authorities.

Libya is on the agenda of talks Dr Muscat will have with his Italian counterpart Enrico Letta on Monday.
