A Libyan man was this afternoon jailed for 18 months and fined €500 after pleading guilty to drug trafficking and possession with intent.

Hashim Elamir, 23, a Libyan refugee who said he had no fixed address in Malta, pleaded guilty to trafficking ecstasy and cocaine and to the possession of ecstasy and cannabis found in circumstances denoting it was not for his personal use. He was also accused of relapsing.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard how the Libyan has been selling drugs for the past four months.

After warning him that he could be imprisoned if he insisted on his guilty plea, she condemned him to 18 months in jail and fined him €500.

Police Inspector Gabriel Micallef prosecuted while lawyer Joseph Mizzi was defence counsel.
