A Libyan who ran off with €5,000 in cash which were meant for the sale of a car was jailed for 18 months today after he admitted the theft and relapsing.
The court was told that Saber Shaban Elkhali, 30, was to sell a Toyota Corolla to Ivan Camilleri.
While the two were driving to Rabat, the Libyan asked Mr Camilleri if he had brought the money with him. Mr Camilleri indicated that the cash was in an envelope on the dashboard.
When the car stopped in traffic, the Libyan man grabbed the envelope and ran off. Mr Camilleri unsuccessfully gave chase, but Mr Elkhali was apprehended by the police a short time afterwards.
The case took place last March.
