A Libyan national was today fined over €8,500 and condemned to a two-year suspended jail term today after he admitted in court to association to export a consignment of shotgun rounds to Libya last August, in violation of UN sanctions.

A number of other people in Malta and Gozo are being investigated in connection with the case.

Khalil Harrus, 37, was charged with trying to export 450 boxes of shotgun cartridges to Libya - a total of 112,500 cartridges

The boxes were hidden in a container marked as containing energy drinks and toiletries.

It was discovered by the police last August.

The court ordered the seizure of the consignment made up of the cartridges worth €38,000, €45,500 in energy drinks and €800 in toiletries.
