A Nigerian oil worker who was among the first people to be evacuated to Malta when the uprising in Libya started, was today jailed for three months after trying to leave Malta using false travel documents.

Police Inspector Joseph Hersey told the court that the accused, Kennth Obeze, 31, had come to Malta to avoid the fighting in Libya after his company closed down. He had left in such a rush, that he did not bring travel documents with him. He arrived in Malta on a Royal Air Force transport aircraft.

Magistrate Anthony Vella said the accused was being jailed for three months, the minimum allowed by law. He told Mr Obeze that once he was out of prison, he should apply through the normal channels to leave the country.
