Health Minister Godfrey Farrugia has denied that out of stock medicines have reached alarming levels, saying the procurement system is presently under review.

Dr Farrugia said there were problems with a few medicines but insisted that the situation was not alarming.

He was speaking as he accompanied Auxiliary Bishop Charles Scicluna on an official visit to Mount Carmel Hospital.

Dr Farrugia also confirmed that the top management of this hospital will not change, amid speculation that the post of chief executive officer, occupied by Richmond Foundation founder Dolores Gauci will be given to a Clifton Grima, a labour election candidate.

He said Dr Grima acted as a rapporteur on a review of the Mental Health Act and did not receive any remuneration for this job.

On the situation at Gzira health centre, which has suffered industrial action, Dr Farrugia said the ministry had reached a deal with the nurse's union but did not want to elaborate on what this deal consisted of.

Around 60 appointments and day are being cancelled because of the shortage of nurses to provide services.
