The Emigrants’ Commission Refugee Section has appealed to people in Malta to be careful not to get used to the crisis in Syria and forget its victims.

In a statement issued on the occasion of Refugee Day, being celebrated tomorrow, the commission said the conflict in Syria was still causing many deaths, injuries and hardships as well as hunger and diseases.

The war in Syria has been going on for three years and the number of Syrian refugees registered in other lands was now close to three million. The number was still growing by more than 100,000 each month including many children, women and elderly people.

The commission, which has more than 40 years experience in refugee protection and humanitarian assistance, was in direct contact with Syrian refugees in Malta and knew well enough what they had been through.

It knew the extent of their problems as a result of dead or lost relatives, others in dangerous places which they could not get out of or in different countries. They also lost all their belongings and went through other hardships.

It could be that people in certain areas of the world had already become indifferent to the Syrian tragedy and Malta would do well to speak against such indifference.

As a peace loving nation, Malta should work for the international community not to fail Syria. It should work for all people who loved peace and justice to work for the crisis to end and the Syrian people to live in peace and full respect of the rights and dignity of all people.
