The man who was convicted of trying to kill the Police Commissioner and his family will get to spend another 11 years in jail after admitting to organising a drug deal from his prison cell.

Emmanuel Camilleri, known as Leli l-Bully, pleaded guilty before Madam Justice Edwina Grima just before the start of his trial by jury.

He admitted to coordinating from prison the delivery of a substantial amount of cocaine and cannabis in 2001.

He is serving a 35-year prison sentence after being found guilty of planting a bomb outside Police Commissioner Michael Cassar’s house when he was still a Drug Squad inspector, and of trying to murder the officer and his family on May 23, 1995.

Mr Camilleri faced life in jail for his involvement in the failed delivery of drugs from The Netherlands but his early guilty plea and his assistance in police investigations to identify and smash the criminal ring led to a leaner sentence.

He offered to admit to the charges and testify against other people involved in the drug plan

Madam Justice Grima heard that the police had been informed about arrangements for the delivery of a substantial amount of drugs being coordinated by people in prison.

Investigations led them to several people, including Mr Camilleri and his brother.

It resulted that Mr Camilleri’s brother had carried out instructions he had received over the phone from his jailed brother and had transferred a substantial amount of money to another person when he knew that this was for the delivery of drugs.

The police foiled the delivery as the two Camilleris were arrested.

As his trial by jury was about to start, Leli l-Bully chose to admit to the charges brought against him and offered to continue helping the police and the justice system by testifying against other people who had been involved in the plan.

He, therefore, benefited from a hefty reduction in punishment.

Madam Justice Grima jailed him for 11 years, fined him €20,000 and ordered the confiscation of all his moveable and immoveable property.
