Life Network Malta and Gift of Life Foundation representatives said today they could not accept any proposed changes to the Embryo Protection Act which could endanger the life of the human embryo in any manner.

In a joint statement, they said they presented their position to the inter-ministerial IVF committee reviewing the current Embryo Protection Act.

They noted that current IVF success rates compared favourably to those overseas and said the current legislation sought to balance helping couples with infertility achieve a pregnancy without resorting to practices that manipulated, selected, froze or destroyed human embryonic life.

"We maintain our position and augur that following the consultation process, any legislation will respect the highest ethical principles and continue to safeguard the best interests of the unborn child, that is, the protection of the human embryo as its primary prerogative," they said.
