Floriana council is planning to replace 5,000 bulbs which light the arcade in St Anne Street with LEDs which will save the council a total of €261 or 1,536kWhr per night.

The council launched the project today, saying it will carry out the project thanks to financial assistance under an alternative energy scheme provided by the government.

A call for tenders for the supply of the LEDs closes on September 12 and the new lighting will be in place within two months.

The details were given at a press conference attended by Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said and Mayor Nigel Holland.

Mr Holland said that the council would also save maintenance costs as each LED bulb can last 30 times more than a conventional bulb.

Dr Said said the first energy saving scheme for councils, launched in 2008, had been taken up by 44 councils, which were saving €125,000 in power consumption per year. They had invested in photovoltaic panels and solar water heaters.
