The government has renewed its commitment towards an EU-funded project to help vulnerable people become more confident and find stable employment.

The Leap programme, which started in 2013, will be extended until the end of this year with the help of government funding, until the EU approves more funds.

The Social Solidarity Ministry renewed the agreement yesterday with the Malta Association for Supported Employment.

The Leap programme – an EU initiative to tackle poverty – was set up to improve the lives of vulnerable people through training and support. Around 250 people have taken part in the programme so far and are finding stable jobs in the private sector.

“It helps people become confident and learn to become independent,” Social Solidarity Minister Michael Farrugia said.

The EU financing, amounting to around €3 million, has ended but the government reapplied. Until the new EU funds are approved, the government will cover the project for a few weeks.
