The Malta Communications Authority has secured a very high-profile line-up of speakers for its 10th anniversary conference that will be held on January 28.

The conference, entitled: “The Next 10 Years in Telecoms” will try to forecast developments in the telecommunications industry in the next 10 years, when, according to the targets set by the European 2020 Strategy of the European Commission, all Europeans will have access to internet speeds of above 30 Mbps, while 50 per cent or more of European households will subscribe to internet connections above 100 Mbps.

The line-up of speakers from around the world includes Chris Fonteijn, chairman of BEREC (The European regulators group for electronic communications); Guillaume Declerck from Alcatel Lucent; Nico van Eijk, professor of media and telecommunications law in The Netherlands; Nic Cantuniar from Cable & Wireless; Yong-Kyung Lee, a telecoms expert and a Member of Parliament in South Korea; Alessandro Di Salvio from Nokia Siemens Networks; and Lars Theobaldt from DETECON.

“The conference this year will mark the authority’s 10th year of operations, so we felt it apt that we centre the theme of the conference on what the next 10 years in communications has in store for us,” explained an MCA spokesman.

“It will be very interesting to see developments and challenges faced in other countries, such as Korea, which today is a leading nation in broadband provision, and more importantly to learn from these experiences. Needless to say, we should be proud of the achievements made to date but we have so much more to look forward to in the future. There is great interest in this particular conference and for the first time, we have attracted a good number of foreign delegates to Malta to attend.”

The conference will ask and try to answer such questions as what we can expect to see on the market in the medium to longer term with next generation networks, cloud computing, social networking, e-health, e-education, and e-commerce impacting our day-to-day business and social lives; what role will regulation play in shaping the future of telecommunications; where will advancements in technology take us and how will consumer behaviour shape this industry; who will get the lion’s share of the value chain: the network operators, service providers, content providers and where will the balance lie; and whether the future of telecommunications lie in the quality of service or in new products and services.

The deadline for registration is January 21. More details are available from the MCA’s events website.
