A discussion between representatives of the main trade union blocs in Malta is among activities being planned by the GWU to mark May 1 - Workers' Day.

The discussion will be held on April 29 and will bring together John Bencini, president of the FORUM group of trade unions, GWU General Secretary Tony Zarb and William Portelli, president of the CMTU. They will discuss trade union unity in Malta.

The discussion will be held a day after a vote will be taken in Brussels on whether FORUM will be able to join the ETUC, the European Trade Union Council. The FORUM had been accusing the CMTU of blocking its membership.

"The discussion will be a golden opportunity for the trade unions to take a concrete step forward towards closer unity," Michael Parnis, deputy general secretary of the GWU told a press conference.

Other activities will include sports, wine tasting, public discussions and exhibitions culminating on May 1 with wreath-laying at the Workers' Monument in Msida and an open day at the Workers' Memorial Building - the GWU offices in Valletta.

Mr Zarb underlined the importance of the workers celebrating May 1, especially, he said, at a time like this when workers were seeing their standard of living and working conditions threatened or eroded.
