It seems that Pope's apostolic letter allowing the celebration of the old rite Latin Mass is meeting with resistance from certain quarters. These include theologians, bishops, priests and "even cardinals". According to reports, the Vatican Secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship has accused bishops and other members of the hierarchy of "trying to sabotage the implementation of the Pope's Motu Proprio".

Commenting on the archbishop's statement, a UK Catholic weekly stated that although his words may seem like an over-reaction "there can be no doubt that in some quarters the Motu Proprio has been bluntly ignored or dismissed" that the bishops had disregarded the Pope's instructions in many parts of the world. The same weekly reported the American chairman of a traditional group as saying that if a substantial number of a parish want it "nothing prevents the pastor from offering an extraordinary form of the Mass in place of an ordinary form".

The controversy does not seem to have reached our shores. Indeed not much has been heard locally about the Motu Proprio or whether there is an interest in the Latin Mass being celebrated once more in our churches.
