St George's 4
Zurrieq 0

\n

St George's are the early pacesetters in Division Two after notching their third victory from as many outings while closest rivals Gozo and Mellieha failed to go beyond a drawn result in their match.

The side from Cospicua played the better football but had to wait until the 44th minute to take the lead against lowly Zurrieq when Keith Darmanin collected a perfect pass from Vince Camilleri before hammering home the opener.

Darmanin scored again in the 73rd minute after some sustained pressure and soon it was 3-0 thanks to a Nazzareno Abela goal.

In the 78th minute Zurrieq were reduced to ten players when Robert Bajada was sent off for dissent.

Abela rounded the score for St George's five minutes from time with another goal after hitting home following a Sevasta cross.

Zejtun Corinthians 0
Gzira United 4

Joe Aquilina's Gzira produced a stunning display and deservedly emerged as easy winners at the expense of Zejtun Corinthians. It was the Maroons' first victory after two draws, which lifted them in the top positions of the standings.

First-half goals from Lawrence Vella and Matthew Cocks saw Gzira gain a double lead at the break.

Zejtun hit back admirably after the break and the Gzira fort escaped with a couple of close shaves before substitute Ian Buhagiar and Baldassare Borg scored two quick goals in the last ten minutes to kill off their opponents.

Zebbug Rangers 0
Dingli Swallows 0

This was Dingli's first point of the season after holding Zebbug to a goalless draw.

The first period was a balanced affair but Dingli could have taken the lead early on when Keith Micallef's free-kick hit the crossbar. Dingli then had a penalty after a foul on Jonathan Sapiano but Jesmond Zammit miskicked his shot from the spot.

Zebbug gained the initiative after the break but goalkeeper Abela was in fine form for Dingli to help his side break their duck in the standings. In the 90th minute Dingli's Dino Pace was sent off for a second caution.

Vittoriosa Stars 2
Attard 0

Vittoriosa obtained three deserved points from this match thanks to second-half goals from Sandro Calleja and Larry Lagana.

The Stars created the better chances during the opening half but found it hard to break the solid Attard defence.

Joe Mizzi had a goal disallowed for offside in the first half and on another occasion another Mizzi effort was saved by Spiteri with the help of the upright.

Vittoriosa took the lead in the 63rd minute through Calleja. Attard's reply never materialised as Vittoriosa sealed the issue a minute from time when Lagana scored following a pass from Albert Bonnici.

Mellieha 1
Gozo Fc 1

An injury-time goal earned the Gozitans a precious point from Monday's first match at the Centenary Stadium when the team was playing with ten players after Alex Tramboo was sent off midway through the second period.

The first half was balanced all the way but after a few seconds from the restart, Mellieha took the lead through Wayne Borg St John.

Gozo responded instantly but on 67 minutes their hopes were jolted when Tramboo received his second yellow card.

Despite this setback, the 'visitors' were still strong enough to create a couple of chances as Mellieha had an Adrian Galea goal disallowed for offside. Mellieha seemed on their way to a vital win but deep into stoppage time John Camilleri drew the teams level with a fine opportunistic goal that saved the Gozitans' day.

Xghajra Tornadoes 2
St Andrews 4

St Andrews dominated this match on Monday and deservedly obtained their first victory of the season.

However, they could not breach the Xghajra defence initially and only opened the score from a penalty, awarded for a foul on Robert Guzman, in the 42nd minute. Dale Spiteri scored from the spot.

Mark Schembri soon increased the Saints' lead after the break and on 50 minutes it was 3-0, thanks to a Jose Borg goal.

Xghajra reduced the arrears after Paul Buttigieg profited from an indecision in the opponents' box but in the 83rd minute Roberto Pisani added a fourth goal for St Andrews.

Three minutes from time Joe Meilaq hit the St Andrews upright but in the 90th minute Xghajra substitute Daniel Axisa found the opponents' net to make it 4-2.

Division Three

Ta' Xbiex 3
Sta Lucija 3

Sta Lucija seemed on their way to victory as they were leading 3-1 with only a few minutes to go. However, two late goals earned Ta' Xbiex their second consecutive drawn result.

The first half finished goalless but the second period was different. On 61 minutes, newcomer Robert Agius, formerly of Xghajra, put Ta' Xbiex ahead but Sta Lucija were soon back on level terms thanks to a Melvin Agius goal from a free-kick.

Kurt Grima and Roderick Mangion put Sta Lucija in the driving seat but Ta' Xbiex were not finished yet. With two minutes to go Agius made it 3-2 and Kevin Pace hit a last-gasp goal to save the day for Ta' Xbiex.

Referee: Karl Frendo Cumbo.

Birzebbuìga 2
Luqa St Andrews 1

Birzebbuga St Peter's obtained their second consecutive victory to assume the leadership in the standings. After beating Qormi in their opening match, Luqa succumbed to their first upset in the league.

Birzebbuga broke the deadlock in the 35th minute through Neville Farrugia but four minutes after the restart Luqa were back on level terms from a penalty scored by substitute Daniel Schembri.

Luqa's substitute 'keeper Publius Grech did well to save his fort on a couple of occasions but could do nothing in the 72nd minute to stop Noel Tabone from scoring the winner.

Referee: Paul Apap.

Sirens 1
Mgarr United 0

Sirens recovered from their setback against Siggiewi in the previous match as they won the match against neighbours Mgarr, the goal coming from veteran Patrick Zammit. Jesmond Cardona (ex-Birkirkara) and former Mosta goalkeeper Chris Calleja made their debut for Sirens.

Mgarr enjoyed most of the possession in the opening half but failed to pierce Sirens' sturdy defence. The St Paul's Bay team played better after the interval with Johan Xuereb and Cardona very much in evidence for the team.

The goal that mattered came 18 minutes from time when Zammit headed beautifully home from a Cardona cross.

Referee: William Debattista.

Qormi 8
Ghaxaq 1

Qormi made up for their setback against Luqa in style, trouncing Ghaxaq by eight goals to one.

It was Ghaxaq who took the lead after ten minutes through Sandro Lapira but goals from Mark Tabone, Michael Borg Olivier and Mark Tabone gave Qormi a deserved 3-1 lead at half-time.

Qormi's dominance continued during the second half. Borg Olivier made it 4-1 and on 64 minutes Aaron Buhagiar added a fifth goal.

Substitute Anthony Brignone then beat the Ghaxaq goalie twice with Tabone notching a hat-trick with a late goal for Qormi's resounding win.

Referee: Juergen Spiteri.
