A British driver who crashed her car into the Ghar id-Dud promenade this morning fled the scene, telling people she was late for work.

The incident happened at 5.15am when the Kia Avella car crashed onto the pavement and through the trees before being stopped by a bollard on the promenade opposite the Preluna Hotel in Sliema.

No one was injured, although this part of the promenade would be full of people in other hours of the day.

The car left a trail of broken masonry, damaged vegetation and three dislodged bollards. It lost its bumper and had a badly damaged bonnet.

The police are investigating.

The incident recalled another one, just over a year ago, when a car crashed across the road and into the promenade when its brakes failed.
