Liverpool failed to return to the top of the Premier League last night after a Tim Cahill goal three minutes from time earned Everton a 1-1 draw in a lively Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Liverpool appeared all set to go back into first place after a Steven Gerrard goal put them ahead after 68 minutes.

The Liverpool captain lashed in a low 30-metre drive that skidded across the surface and eluded Tim Howard as Everton conceded their first goal in six matches.

But Everton struck back in the dying minutes. Yossi Benayoun gave away a needless free-kick down the Everton left flank after a foul on Victor Anichebe.

Mikel Arteta swept in a superbly struck free-kick and Cahill got ahead of the Liverpool defence to glance in the equaliser.

Liverpool gave striker Fernando Torres his first start since his return from a hamstring injury and was partnered by Robbie Keane. The Spanish international missed a glorious opportunity to put Liverpool ahead midway through the first half when he hit the post with only Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard to beat.

The draw saw Liverpool go level with Manchester United on 47 points but the champions stay top on goal difference and now have a game in hand.

Everton remain sixth with 36 points.

Playing today: League Cup semi-final, second legs -, 20.00 Manchester United vs Derby County (0-1). Tomorrow - 20.45 Burnley vs Tottenham (1-4).
