Talks are underway with the Libyan authorities for a large number of Libyans to come to study English in Malta, Education Minister Dolores Cristina said today.

She said the language teaching sector currently employed 1,300. of whom 73% were women for whom this was their main occupation.

Speaking at the inauguration of a new language school - BELS School in St Paul's Bay - the Minister said the sector is expected to enjoy major opportunities in the coming weeks as a result of talks currently underway with the Libyan authorities for Libyan students to study in Malta, with their priority being to study English.

The plans were also discussed when the Libyan education minister was in Malta last month.
