Transport Malta has opened a southbound (uphill) lane for traffic on the Mellieha bypass.
The opening is intended to relieve traffic pressure in the area by giving a faster route and hence a reduction in travelling time, TM said.

The works on the bypass - which is being rebuilt - are partially funded by the EU. The project is expected to continue for the rest of the year.

"Motorists are encouraged to make use of the diversion route and to avoid the Mellieha village core," Transport Malta said.
The bypass project was a source of controversy last year when traffic was stopped from going uphill through Mellieha village centre. It was diverted along a long route through country roads near Popeye Village. The decision was reversed after motorists' complaints and the intervention of Transport Minister Austin Gatt.
