Chelsea have played down the extent of a new injury suffered by Frank Lampard, saying yesterday they expect the England midfielder would be fit for next week’s clash with Bolton.

Lampard underwent a scan on Wednesday after suffering a calf injury in training, sparking fears that the 32-year-old faced another spell on the sidelines after only recently returning from a long lay-off.

However, Chelsea said yesterday they expected Lampard to be available for Monday’s meeting with Bolton.

“Frank Lampard is suffering from a minor calf problem which will be monitored over the next few days,” a Chelsea statement said.

“The midfielder, who has played every minute of our last six matches since Christmas, is expected to be available for Bolton on Monday night.”

Lampard missed four months from August but returned against Tottenham Hotspur in December.

He scored twice in the Blues’ 7-0 FA Cup rout of Ipswich Town earlier this month.
