Second Division

Vittoriosa Stars 3
San Gwann 2

This was one of the best matches so far this season with Vittoriosa hitting back from two goals down. San Gwann played an excellent first half but were outclassed after the interval.

In the opening minutes Vittoriosa goalkeeper Chris Cini effected some fine saves to protect his fort but midway through the half he could do nothing to stop Mark Psaila's firm header from a Renato Caruana cross.

San Gwann sustained the pressure and after a couple of close shaves the Vittoriosa rearguard fell apart once again early in the second half when Karl Sciberras blasted home after being put through by Alan Spiteri.

Vittoriosa regained composure however and in the 62nd minute it was 2-1 when Robert Adami scored from a free-kick. With the wind in their sails now, the Cottonera side laid siege on their opponents and it did not take them long to draw level thanks to a Larry Lagana goal.

The game was open to any eventuality now but it was Lagana, again, who scored the decisive goal for Vittoriosa with four minutes to go as the Stars shot to the top of the standings.

Tarxien Rainbows 0
Qormi 1

Qormi are back in the promotion hunt after beating Tarxien Rainbows with Victor Schembri scoring the decisive goal in the first period.

Qormi dictated the run of play and on 12 minutes they were unlucky when Steve Baldacchino's drive hit the bar. But in the 24th minute Qormi took the lead thanks to a superb Schembri strike.

Qormi held the initiative and twice went close through James Tabone and Michael Borg Olivier.

After the resumption Tarxien's Claude Mangion and Jeffrey Zammit saw their efforts going wide and in the 71st minute their woes were compounded when they lost Anthony Bonello who was sent off for a second caution.

Qormi defender James Tabone was also sent off for dissent later on.

Referee: Mark Spiteri.

Luqa St Andrews 1
Mellieha 1

Luqa St Andrews are still rock bottom but this point may turn out to be useful as their struggle with relegation continues.

Mellieha were the better side in the initial stages going on to take the lead after 21 minutes when Roberto Vella fired home an unstoppable drive. Luqa keeper Fulvio Azzopardi was then called to make difficult saves on shots from Ray Vella and Jeffrey Gauci.

But after the interval Luqa assumed the initiative and after missing a couple of chances, substitute Malcolm Psaila concluded some fine work from Oliver Cutajar.

Luqa sustained the pressure but it was Mellieha who almost scored a late winner only for Kevin Gauci's shot to be stopped by the upright.

Referee: Khaled Al Arby.

Dingli Swallows 3
Zurrieq 0

Dingli Swallows, also involved in the struggle to avoid the drop, obtained three very important points as they beat fellows-in-distress Zurrieq with three second-half goals.

At first, Zurrieq played the better football but Dingli held sway and reserved their best for the second half.

In the 56th minute they broke the deadlock through Mark Bugeja after Zurrieq keeper Farrugia had blocked a Jonathan Sapiano shot. Six minutes later Sapiano made it 2-0 with Zurrieq gaining a penalty in the 75th minute for a foul on Chetcuti. Philip Farrugia's shot from the spot was saved by Mark Abela.

Ten minutes from time Dingli sealed a merited win with a third goal scored by Alex Portelli.

Referee: Alan Camilleri.

Third Division

Sta Lucija 1
Melita 0

This was the Amateurs' first upset of the season with the winning goal for mid-table side Sta Lucija coming from a penalty midway through the second half.

Despite this setback Melita are still leading the standings together with Birzebbuga on the 12-point mark.

Melita had to play most of the match with 10 men after the 23rd-minute dismissal of Christian Glass who was spotted by the assistant referee in an off-the-ball incident.

The Saints also had a player red-carded just after the break when Melvin Agius was sent off for retaliation.

They scored the decisive goal right on the hour when Alex Muscat was tripped in the Melita box and Mario Galea hit home from the penalty spot.

Referee: Malcolm Mercieca.

Gudja United 0
Siggiewi 1

A first-half goal scored by Marlon Vella was enough for Siggiewi to notch their third victory of the season. They are now just two points behind joint leaders Melita and Birzebbuga.

Siggiewi were the ones to show the better ideas and deservedly opened the score after 15 minutes thanks to a fine lob from Vella following a Massimo Borg through pass.

Borg was unlucky in the second half to see his drive coming off the woodwork as Gudja never really threatened the Siggiewi goal.

Referee: Juergen Meli.
