I want to draw attention to the public transform reform, when and if it comes about. If it is to serve the public, the public has to be catered for and wooed to use the bus instead of the car.

I refer to the despicable state of some buses, especially the lack of windows. I do not expect air-conditioning on buses as this will raise the price of the fares astronomically. I am sure, however, that we definitely need windows that can open, windows that are not too small and roof ventilators that will circulate air. We used to have windows at every seat. These are necessary for our hot summers when buses become saunas and everyone drips with sweat. Buses are certainly not the best travel option in this heat.

Then in winter, windows are necessary to ventilate air in the bus especially when the flu season sets in and everyone is sneezing and coughing. With the onset of the swine flu and other forms of influenza, the bus becomes a disease-laden vehicle. How can people opt to use the buses in such situations? I hope and pray that this problem of enough windows that can be opened at will, is addressed with vigour by the people concerned.
