Labour MP Marlene Farrugia did not turn up to vote on the bill to transform Enemalta into a plc this morning because of the lack of information given by the government about the corporation’s deal with a Chinese government company.

The bill was approved with 33 votes for and 27 against. Three government MP away on government business were paired with three Opposition MPs. Dr Farrugia, Silvio Parnis and Franco Mercieca were absent.

The outspoken MP said when contacted that unless proven otherwise by the publication of all the relevant documents she was under the impression that a foreign government was acquiring substantial control over the only power generation entity in the country.

“This it will do by acquisition as well as by operation of our generating power plant.

“The fate of the workers is also still unclear, since nothing in black and white was presented for our perusal, to prove otherwise.

“Therefore I felt that a decision on my part to confirm or otherwise the wisdom of this turn of events, can only be taken  after I have been made privy to what the actual MOU and agreements really hold, for the present and future of my country.”

The Opposition have been calling for the documents to be tabled and requested a ruling but the Speaker ruled against the request.

Last March, Dr Farrugia had agreed with Nationalist MPs when they requested a discussion in the parliamentary Environment Planning Committee on the environment impact assessment of the new power station.
