A 38-year-old labourer who has five pending court cases was remanded in custody today after pleading not guilty to stealing from two garages.

Stephen Borg, who told the court he had rehabilitated himself from a drug addiction, appeared before Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera.

The prosecution led by police inspector Saviour Baldacchino objected to the man's release from arrest, saying he had repeatedly breached the bail conditions related to his other pending cases. He also expressed concern that the accused would approach his former partner, who was also facing charges.

The court rejected the request for bail, for fear of tampering evidence.

Lawyer Mark Busuttil was defence counsel.
