Labour Party supporters thronged Valletta for a mass meeting to mark Workers’ Day this afternoon, with Prime Minister Joseph Muscat using the occasion to announce a general election on June 3.

The expectation ahead of the rally was that the election would be called for June 3 or June 10, and Dr Muscat did not disappoint.

People began gathering in Valletta in the early afternoon, with red and white t-shirts, Labour flags and posters exalting Dr Muscat.

As they waited for Dr Muscat to appear on the podium, people danced, sang and waved flags in a party-like atmosphere. 

Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi was given a hero’s welcome as he made his way through the crowd.

Nationalist Party leader Simon Busuttil also held a May 1 rally, with a crowd of thousands gathered at Spinola Bay in St Julian's.
